At The John R. Oishei Foundation, we are proud to lead the way as the most comprehensive private foundation in Western New York—focusing on a broad range of interrelated issues, and offering philanthropic support that goes far beyond funding. We work to make an impact, inspire others, and improve lives throughout our community.
Approximately 60% of the people in Buffalo-Niagara are directly affected by our work and the work of our grantees. If you've enjoyed the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra or local theater, visited a neighborhood health center, sought care on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (including The John R. Oishei Children's Hospital), explored the Niagara Aquarium, or biked in Buffalo, you have experienced the impact of our work and that of our grantees.
The John R. Oishei Foundation supports work throughout the eight counties of Western New York in the following inter-related areas:
> Strengthen the P-20 Education Continuum
> Enhance Options for Self-Sufficiency
> Build Livable, Stable Neighborhoods
> Promote Health and Improve Systems of Care
> Expand the Role of Arts, Culture, and Heritage in Regional Development
At the Oishei Foundation, we recognize that our community faces numerous challenges and opportunities, which is why we do much more than provide financial support. Through our internal staff and community-wide networks, we offer support that empowers change-makers to go further, move faster, and achieve even greater impact.

A Tribute to Our Founder: The John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital
In honor of our founder—an early advocate of healthcare for children and a generous philanthropist—The Foundation made its largest single gift to The John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital, supporting the development of the new, world-class children’s hospital.
