Buffalo, NY, May 15, 2022 – Yesterday, we were horrified and heartbroken to learn about the brutal killing of ten of our fellow Buffalonians as they went about their routine day of grocery shopping and going to work.
To learn that this massacre was likely driven by racial motives makes this act even more chilling, particularly for people of color and those that reside in the East Side neighborhood where it occurred. While our country continues to witness mass shootings and gun violence, it hits particularly hard in our own community, knowing it will have an indelible impact on friends, family, and colleagues for years to come.
The Oishei Foundation condemns this cowardly act and the racial hatred behind it. This senseless tragedy strengthens our resolve and our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. We hope others join us in understanding that we all must use our talents and resources to create a community where belonging and opportunity are offered to all, and where diversity is valued and embraced.
We are currently working with our community partners to assess the direct and indirect impact on those they serve in communities of color and on the East Side to extend our support where possible.
Yesterday was a very dark day for Western New York. Our thoughts and prayers are with all victims and their loved ones.
