The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus is one of Western New York’s most important success stories and the Oishei Foundation has been a significant contributor to capital projects, research and bridging connections between organizations, people and locations on Campus. The Foundation was an early contributor, underwriting the strategic plan for what was then known as the High Street Corridor. That plan led to the creation of the Medical Campus in the early 2000’s and the Foundation has been involved every step of the way.
Early support was in medical research at University of Buffalo (UB) and Hauptman Woodward Medical Research Institute and grew to include financial support of the UB Bioinformatics Hub, with the goal of improving health outcomes in WNY We helped the BNMC, Inc. purchase property through mission-related investing that provided space for expansion and to create a contiguous campus in downtown Buffalo.
The Oishei Foundation has invested in a number of Medical Campus capital projects including the Scott R. Bieler Clinical Sciences Center at Roswell Park, Gates Vascular Institute and the Jacobs Institute. Most recently, the Oishei Foundation made significant investments in the newly opened Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of $5 million and The John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital with a $10 million gift. The support for Children’s was the largest gift in the Foundation’s history and was made in honor of our founder John R. Oishei whose generosity was often focused on healthcare and families. While the hospital is named in honor of the Foundation’s founder, it is an entirely separate entity.
