Since 1998, The John R. Oishei Foundation has awarded local eighth-grade students scholarships to attend private high schools in the area. Administered in partnership with the Education Collaborative of WNY (EdCo), the program was designed to provide financial assistance to talented and yet economically disadvantaged students who aspired to attend private high school. To date, the Foundation has funded scholarships for nearly 300 students, totaling $10 million in education funding.
To date, the Foundation has funded scholarships for nearly 350 students, totaling $13 million in education funding.
Intended to make a positive difference in the perception, attitudes, and lives of students, families and the academic institutions they attend, the scholarship is now focused solely on students of color. The highly selective and competitive scholarships are provided at 14 area schools and fully funds four years of high school education for selected students.
The Foundation is also a supporter of the BISON Children’s Scholarship Fund, a privately funded tuition assistance program for low-income elementary school children to attend a private elementary school of choice. In addition to scholarships, the Oishei Foundation is also a strong supporter of Buffalo Prep, an organization dedicated to helping talented underrepresented students prepare for, obtain entrance into, and excel at demanding college preparatory high schools. With programs for middle school, high school and early college, Buffalo Prep works with students to ensure success on the entire continuum of education leading to college and beyond.
